I am a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan…
Today Mark McGwire went on record for what everyone knew already, he did steroids on and off during the 90′s. Deep down, I knew it was true. As a loyal fan to the game of baseball and the players who have worn Cardinals jerseys, I didn’t want to believe it. It’s painful knowing a person I considered a hero to the game I love is a cheater. Ultimately, it was the right thing for him to do. The charade has gone on long enough and I appreciate him coming clean (pun intended). I hope now that he’s back in the public eye and working as a batting coach and possible player in St. Louis that he turn this into something positive and teach up and coming players about the dangers of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.
I don’t regret the years McGwire was with St Louis. McGwire is what brought the Cardinals back to center stage and put us in a position to compete on a monetary level with the upper tier teams. Because of the revenue McGwire helped bring in, we’re in a great new stadium.
And not for one second will I think that him coming back to the team as a hitting coach is a bad thing. PED’s help bat speed and swing power, but they do not teach good hitting habits. McGwire developed those on his own through years of playing and will pass them along to the other players in St. Louis. Maybe he can teach Holliday how to catch a fly ball also.
If McGwire makes it to the Hall, he’ll be the first player accepted with an asterisk on his career. I think he’s come to terms with that and also that he might not ever see the Hall now that he’s let the truth be known. It’s his cross to bare.
Thanks Big Mac.
